Islamabad.- Torrential monsoon rains in
Pakistan have raised the death toll to 739 since the beginning of the season, with 32 deaths reported in the last hours, while the number of injured rises to 958, according to the latest report from the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA).
The most recent emergency is concentrated in Karachi, the country’s financial capital, which has been paralyzed. The port metropolis, the most populous in Pakistan, is submerged by water, with flooded streets and hundreds of stranded vehicles.
The situation forced the Sindh provincial government to declare a holiday to avoid displacement.
In this city alone, the rescue service confirmed to EFE the death of at least ten people due to drowning, electrocution, and the collapse of walls.
Although the emergency is now focused on the south, the northwestern province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa remains the hardest-hit region, accounting for 437 of the total deaths.
In that area, rescue teams continue the search for more than a hundred missing people after the catastrophic floods of the weekend.
Nationwide, the impact of the rains has damaged or destroyed almost 3,000 homes, caused the loss of more than a thousand heads of cattle, and affected more than 450 kilometers of roads and 152 bridges.
The current catastrophe evokes the unprecedented floods of 2022, when a “monsoon on steroids” submerged a third of the country, caused the deaths of more than 1,700 people, and generated economic losses exceeding $30 billion.
