A federal court has issued an emergency order temporarily blocking new U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) policies that threatened to strip work authorization from thousands of asylum seekers and beneficiaries of Temporary Protected Status (TPS).
The ruling is a temporary setback for the administration of President Donald Trump, suspending the implementation of measures that immigrant advocacy groups argued could lead to the cancellation of work permits and the denial of asylum applications without sufficient due process protections. The order will remain in effect while the lawsuit proceeds in federal court.
According to the plaintiffs, thousands of TPS beneficiaries were at risk of losing their work authorization beginning July 22 under USCIS policies implementing parts of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act. The lawsuit was filed by the Venezuelan Association of Massachusetts, the National TPS Alliance, the Asylum Seeker Advocacy Project (ASAP), SEIU, and 32BJ SEIU, with legal representation from Democracy Forward, the National Day Laborer Organizing Network, and ASAP.
