Former Uruguayan deputy Gustavo ‘Tato’ Olmos passed away this Monday at the age of 64, due to cancer, according to his sector within the ruling political force, the Frente Amplio.
“Tato Olmos, who had been battling cancer, passed away today. He was the driving force behind Marea, a great deputy in the last legislature, a charming guy, with a fine sense of humor, always affectionate, supportive, brilliant and hardworking. How we are going to miss him! Farewell, dear Tato,” posted Marea on X.
According to the local media outlet Montevideo Portal, Olmos, who studied at the public University of the Republic, where he served as a student representative and participated in the founding of various university union associations, had been hospitalized for almost two months due to tongue cancer.
The news of his death was lamented by the sectors that make up the leftist Frente Amplio Fuerza Renovadora and Seregnistas, who highlighted his “great performance as a deputy in the last legislature”.
In turn, the Uruguayan Minister of Education and Culture, José Carlos Mahía, a member of the same sector, remembered him through a post on X as “an endearing companion” and conveyed his condolences and solidarity to his family, friends, and colleagues.

At the end of 2023, Frente Amplio deputy Martina Casás filed a criminal complaint against Olmos for alleged sexual and labor harassment, on which – after its analysis – the Political Conduct Tribunal of the Frente Amplio concluded that there was not enough evidence, so last June it was archived by the Uruguayan Prosecutor’s Office that handled the case.
According to the local newspaper El País, the complaint generated within the -then opposition- Frente Amplio a division between those who supported Olmos and those who supported Casás and, at the same time, a discussion about whether the link between Olmos and Casás had been agreed upon or not.
