Lula says that the capture of Maduro by the U.S. “crosses an unacceptable line”
São Paulo,.- Brazilian President, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, stated this Saturday that the capture of Venezuelan President, Nicolás Maduro, as well as the bombings of the South American country by the United States “cross an unacceptable line”.
Lula stated in a statement that the attack on Venezuela launched during the early hours, with bombings in Caracas and other areas of the country, constitutes a “very serious affront to the sovereignty” of that nation, as well as an “extremely dangerous precedent for the entire international community.”
“Attacking countries, in flagrant violation of international law, is the first step towards a world of violence, chaos, and instability, where the law of the strongest prevails over multilateralism,” highlighted the leader of the largest Latin American power.
The Brazilian president added that the U.S. military operation “recalls the worst moments of interference in Latin American politics” and “threatens the preservation of the region as a zone of peace.”
In that sense, he said that the United Nations “needs to respond vigorously” to what happened and that Brazil “remains available” to “promote the path of dialogue and cooperation.”
Previously, U.S. President Donald Trump described the operation as “a large-scale attack” and announced that Maduro was “captured and taken out of the country.”
According to U.S. Attorney General Pamela Bondi, the Venezuelan president and his wife Cilia Flores, who was also captured, will “soon” face the justice of the North American nation for the accusations of drug trafficking.
Venezuela’s Vice President, Delcy Rodríguez, for her part, denounced that the whereabouts of Maduro and his wife are unknown and demanded that the Trump administration present proof of life for both.
At the beginning of December, Lula spoke separately with Trump and Maduro to try to mediate the conflict, which worsened four months ago with the deployment of a US war fleet off the Venezuelan coast.
The Brazilian ruler has been critical of the United States’ war campaign in Latin America and the Caribbean and has since reiterated that the region is a zone of peace.
In September, the Trump administration launched a series of attacks against civilian boats that, according to Washington, belong to drug trafficking gangs.
The US Executive has justified its actions against Venezuela by accusing Maduro of leading an international drug trafficking organization.
