Manoel Carlos, one of the great authors of the Brazilian telenovela, dies at 92

São Paulo.- Manoel Carlos, one of the great authors of Brazilian soap operas and who fought against Parkinson’s disease during the last year, passed away this Saturday at the age of 92, according to his family on social media. “With deep sorrow we announce the passing of Manoel Carlos Gonçalves de Almeida, affectionately known as Maneco, who passed away today at the age of 92,” wrote actress Julia Almeida, daughter of Manoel and in charge of administering her father’s audiovisual legacy. According to local media, the author spent the last days interned at the Copa Star Hospital in Copacabana, where he was receiving treatment for Parkinson’s disease, a condition that in the last year affected his motor and cognitive development.

“Maneco” was born on March 14, 1933, in São Paulo, although he called himself a “carioca at heart” and placed the city of Rio de Janeiro as another protagonist in all his productions. He began his career in television in the 1960s as a screenwriter and director of television programs. However, it was in the 1970s when he began to stand out as a telenovela author on Globo television, the most-watched in the country. Creator of the telenovela trilogy ‘Vale Tudo’ (1988), ‘Por Amor’ (1997) and ‘Laços de Família’ (2000), some of his creations have been broadcast in more than 150 countries.
