San Juan.- More than 25,000 customers of the company in charge of electricity transmission in Puerto Rico, LUMA Energy, were left without electricity service on Wednesday night, Christmas Eve, due to “bad weather”, which has increased citizen frustration.

“Our crews are actively responding to outages caused by the bad weather in several communities including areas of Barranquitas, Canóvanas, San Juan, Vega Alta and Villalba (central and northern Puerto Rico),” the company indicated on its Facebook account. The LUMA portal, in charge of the electricity supply, counted at 10:20 p.m. local time (2:45 GMT) a total of 25,880 customers without service throughout the archipelago, which has 1.5 million subscribers.

The Government of Puerto Rico filed a lawsuit last week before the Court of First Instance of San Juan, to declare the nullity of the LUMA contract.

The Puerto Rico power grid is very fragile since it was destroyed during Hurricane Maria in 2017, with power outages on the island being frequent, although usually not of this magnitude. The constant blackouts that have occurred in the archipelago since LUMA began working in Puerto Rico in June 2021, and the increases in the bill despite the electrical interruptions, are some of the causes that have generated dissatisfaction with the company among citizens. Once again, Puerto Ricans are dealing with the lack of light in their homes and on the streets at Christmas, just like last year when a breakdown caused a massive blackout on New Year’s Eve in Puerto Rico and many citizens welcomed 2025 in the dark.
