Santo Domingo, DR.– Relations between the Dominican Republic and Nicaragua are going through a new moment of tension after the Nicaraguan government decided to end the presence of its diplomatic mission in Dominican territory.
Managua’s representation in Santo Domingo was led by Neysser Reyes Tijerino, minister counselor and chargé d’affaires, who served as the head of the mission.
The decision comes after a recent exchange of positions between both governments regarding the political and electoral situation in Nicaragua. The Dominican Republic publicly stated its stance on the direction of the Nicaraguan electoral process, while Managua responded by asserting its sovereignty and the right to make its own internal decisions.
As a consequence of the deterioration in relations, the Dominican government had also recalled its ambassador to Nicaragua, Acsamary Guzmán Nina, for consultations.
The mission’s closure comes after a period in which the Nicaraguan representation maintained an active agenda in the country. During the last year, it organized cultural activities such as La Purísima, a tribute to the poet Rubén Darío, and the first Nicaraguan Palo de Mayo celebrated in the Dominican Republic. It also held a Concert for Peace at the National Library, featuring more than 13 artists and the attendance of about 300 families.

The delegation also participated in the International Book Fair, presented a Nicaraguan-produced documentary at the Indotel Cultural Center, and commemorated the Independence of Central America. It also initiated outreach to explore municipal cooperation projects with the Moca City Hall.

Although they now face differences, the Dominican Republic and Nicaragua had maintained a relationship characterized by cooperation in areas such as culture, tourism, mobility, diplomatic training, and risk management. Both countries have also coincided in regional mechanisms such as the Central American Integration System and DR-CAFTA.

In the commercial sphere, trade between the two nations reached 112 million dollars in 2025. Dominican exports to Nicaragua accounted for about 50 million dollars, while purchases of Nicaraguan products were around 62 million.
The withdrawal of the mission marks a new chapter in the ties between both countries, whose permanent diplomatic presence had been reactivated in October 1966, after the rupture of relations caused by the collective sanctions adopted against the Dominican Republic by the Organization of American States in 1960.
