TAP cancels commercial flights to Venezuela until November 25 after US alert.
Lisbon. – The Portuguese airline TAP reported this Saturday that it canceled a flight scheduled for today and another for next Tuesday bound for Venezuela after receiving a notice from the US aeronautical authorities that security conditions are not guaranteed in that country.
An official source from TAP specified that they have adopted this measure to ensure the safety of passengers and crew, “in accordance with international recommendations.”
“TAP confirms that flights TP170, scheduled for November 22nd and 25th to Venezuela, were canceled. This decision stems from information issued by the aeronautical authorities of the United States, which indicates that safety conditions are not guaranteed in Venezuelan airspace, especially in the Maiquetía flight information region,” he explained.
The airline source, under state control and in the process of reprivatization, assured that all passengers were informed of the cancellation of these routes and will be able to request a refund.
And he added: “TAP regrets the inconvenience caused and reiterates that this decision is to ensure the safety of passengers and crew, in accordance with international recommendations.”
The cancellation of these flights comes after the warning issued on Friday by the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) urging commercial flights to “exercise extreme caution” when flying over Venezuela and the southern Caribbean in the face of what it considers “a potentially dangerous situation in the region”.
This notice to airlines with flights to Venezuela coincides with Washington’s large military deployment in the area to pressure the Venezuelan government of Nicolás Maduro.
This Saturday, Iberia also announced its decision to cancel its commercial flights to Venezuela and will be evaluating the situation in that country to decide when to resume its operations.
