The case of Emily Gómez, an 18-year-old Guatemalan student, generated national shock after confirming the discovery of her lifeless body, after being missing for several weeks. Authorities confirmed that the young woman had last been seen when she was going to a birthday lunch with a friend, and her death rekindled concern about the increase in disappearances of women in Guatemala.
Authorities suspect revenge and six people have been captured
The young woman’s disappearance occurred on February 15, the day before her 19th birthday.
The last time she was seen publicly and officially, she was in front of a pharmacy at kilometer 54.3 of the jurisdiction route to
Barberena, Santa Rosa, at which time she was going to lunch organized by a friend. A few hours later, her family lost all contact with her and the
Isabel-Claudina alert for missing women was activated.
The anguish lasted for almost a month until
the discovery of a body on March 8th. Authorities reported that the body showed signs of violence and that the location was key, as it coincided with the area where Emily’s trail had been lost.
Local media reported that the remains were found by the family while conducting a search operation on their own.
Investigations by the
National Civil Police (PNC) led to the capture of six people allegedly linked to the case. On March 12,
Ezequiel P., 36 years old;
Jonathan A., 20 years old;
Ludwin M., 28 years old;
Breyner D., 20 years old;
Erick L., 40 years old; and
Yeimi H., 20 years old, were arrested. The detainees worked as
motorcycle taxi drivers, and face formal charges for crimes of
conspiracy to kidnap or abduct, as well as for
obstructing criminal action. The arrest warrant was issued on March 11, according to PNC reports.
So far, the researchers’ hypothesis indicates that the murder could be linked to
revenge related to an alleged love affair, although the police continue to investigate the degree of participation of each person arrested.
On April 17, the
National Institute of Forensic Sciences of Guatemala (INACIF) confirmed that the remains found belonged to
Emily Fernanda Gómez Chávez. The identification took weeks, as the scene where the body was found, a farm in the municipality of Barberena, Santa Rosa, showed signs of alterations with the presence of other human remains, according to the authorities.
Families Demand Justice After the Delivery of Emily’s Remains
The family of
Emily Gómez formally received the remains this weekend, after the definitive confirmation of identity by the INACIF. The young woman was mourned by her relatives, who have publicly demanded that the circumstances of her death be clarified and that those responsible face justice.
The repercussions of the case reinforce the social demand for security guarantees for women in Guatemala and highlight the speed with which alert systems and criminal justice operate in crimes of this nature.
