Bogotá – Colombia’s Defense Minister, Pedro Sánchez Suárez, offered this Saturday a reward of 3,000 million pesos (about 729,000 dollars) for information leading to the capture of those responsible for the attack against Senator Miguel Uribe Turbay, one of the presidential candidates of the Uribista Democratic Center party (right-wing), who was seriously injured. “We offer a reward of up to 3 billion pesos to anyone who provides information that allows us to identify and capture those responsible. I have ordered the Military Forces, the Police, and intelligence agencies to deploy all their capabilities to urgently clarify the facts,” Sánchez stated on X.

Uribe Turbay, 39, received several gunshot wounds while campaigning in a park in the Modelia neighborhood, in western Bogotá, and was taken seriously injured to the Medicentro Clinic by his collaborators, who in videos released on social media, are seen carrying him amid tears.

The senator is a politician close to former President Álvaro Uribe and one of the most severe critics of Colombian President Gustavo Petro, especially regarding the deterioration of security in the country.

“This attack pains us. It mobilizes us to redouble efforts to protect life, guarantee free political participation, and deliver justice,” added Minister Sánchez.

The head of the Defense portfolio added that this same Saturday they will hold “an extraordinary meeting with the military and police leadership to outline the strategy to address this situation.”
