Bogotá.- The president of the United States, Donald Trump, told his Colombian counterpart, Gustavo Petro, this Tuesday that it was a “great honor” to meet him and that he loves Colombia, in the dedication of a card he gave him during the meeting of more than two hours they had in Washington.

Petro also posted another photo of the book ‘Trump, the art of the deal’ that the American president signed for him with the message: “You are great”. “What did Trump mean to say to me in this dedication? I don’t understand much English”, Petro pointed out in the message accompanying the second photo. The meeting, which took place behind closed doors and without press access, did not have a high-profile reception like that of other leaders, such as the Salvadoran, Nayib Bukele; and the Argentinian, Javier Milei. The Colombian president arrived aboard a vehicle from the United States Secret Service with the Colombian flag, although he was not received at the door of the West Wing by Trump nor by the traditional military honor guard. White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt stated in an interview with Fox News that Trump entered “in a very good mood” into the meeting. This was the first meeting between Trump and Petro, who is in the final stretch of his term, with the first round of the Colombian presidential elections scheduled for May 31. In the center was the issue of drug trafficking, as Washington maintains that cocaine production has skyrocketed under the Petro government, while the latter defends that its crop substitution policy has been successful.
