A 27-year-old woman and a 5-month-old baby died after a boat capsized Saturday night near Liberty Island in New York’s Upper Bay. Both were taken to a hospital in critical condition, where they were later pronounced dead. It is unclear whether they were related.
The incident prompted a major emergency response involving New York City firefighters, divers and aviation units. Twelve other people were rescued from the water and taken to hospitals with minor injuries.
Authorities have not yet released information about what caused the boat to capsize.
