Mbappé and Asencio rescue Real Madrid on a night marked by whistles
MADRID.- Real Madrid defeated Levante 2-0 this Saturday at the Santiago Bernabéu stadium, in a match conditioned by the hostile atmosphere of the stands, which expressed their discontent with loud whistles towards the white team despite the victory.
The goals of the Madrid team came in the second half. The French Kylian Mbappé opened the scoring in the 58th minute after converting a penalty, while Raúl Asencio sealed the match eight minutes later with an accurate header for the final 2-0.
The match was marked by the fans’ reaction, annoyed by the team’s recent results, which in just eight days lost the Spanish Super Cup final against Barcelona (3-2) and were eliminated in the round of 16 of the Copa del Rey against Albacete (3-2). Added to this was the change in the dugout, with “Álvaro Arbeloa” debuting as coach after the departure of “Xabi Alonso”.
From the pre-match warm-up, with a Bernabéu still far from full, the first whistles began to be heard, which intensified during the announcement of the starting lineup. Vinícius Jr. and Jude Bellingham were the players most singled out by the stands, receiving constant boos throughout the match.
Not even the start of the match appeased the public’s discomfort. Without the anthem playing over the public address system, whistles and handkerchiefs reappeared as a sign of disapproval. The club’s president himself, Florentino Pérez, was also the target of some isolated shouts calling for his resignation.
In contrast, Arbeloa’s debut on the Bernabéu bench did not generate a notable reaction among the fans.
Despite the adverse environment, Real Madrid managed to deliver on the scoreboard and add three points that momentarily alleviate the tension, although the public’s response showed the delicate moment the team is going through at an institutional and sporting level.
