A woman and a baby have died this Sunday and at least 12 others have been injured after a boat capsized near the island where the Statue of Liberty is located, in New York, according to what the United States Coast Guard reported this Sunday.
The captain of the vessel, identified as Manuel Hernández, 46, has been arrested and charged with reckless endangerment, authorities have detailed.
The New York Police Department has explained that both the 27-year-old woman and the five-month-old baby were transported to a Brooklyn hospital in critical condition, where they subsequently passed away.
In addition, a dozen people have been rescued in the accident and taken to hospitals with minor injuries. The authorities have not provided details about the vessel or its operator.
