Peru. – The Dominican Port Authority (APORDOM) and HIT Puerto Río Haina were awarded by the Inter-American Committee on Ports (CIP) of the Organization of American States (OAS), with the Maritime Award of the Americas 2025, in the Port-City Relationship category.
The recognition was awarded during the XI edition of the Maritime Award of the Americas, held within the framework of the VI Hemispheric Conference on Sustainable Port Management and Environmental Protection, held from September 23 to 25 in Lima, Peru.
The distinction highlights the impact of the Sea Turtle Conservation and Protection Program in Playa Manresa, an initiative that protects nests of endangered species, promotes their reproduction, and fosters environmental education in the community.
This project is the result of the collaboration between APORDOM, HIT Puerto Rico Haina, the Ministry of Environment, the National Aquarium, and the community of Km. 13, demonstrating that port sustainability is strengthened through public-private cooperation and citizen participation.
The award was received by the deputy director of APORDOM, Christian Morel, on behalf of the executive director, Jean Luis Rodríguez.
Apordom’s head, Jean Luis Rodríguez, stated: “This recognition fills us with pride because it consolidates the Dominican Republic’s port leadership in the Americas. It also reflects the commitment of all members of the Dominican port system to the principles of modern and sustainable development, in line with the Roatán Action Plan and the strategic priorities of the CIP-OAS”.
He also highlighted that the award recognizes the joint efforts of the port sector and the local community, with an emphasis on sustainability, territorial integration, and social responsibility.
In this edition of the award, the jury evaluated 19 applications from eight countries on the continent, all of high level.
