Boca Chica.– Although a large amount of sargassum has covered part of the Boca Chica beach, dozens of bathers continue to visit this traditional tourist destination to enjoy its waters and surroundings. Meanwhile, merchants and authorities are carrying out cleaning efforts to reduce the impact of the macroalgae in the area.
The presence of sargassum has caused discomfort among visitors, who claim that this situation affects the image of the resort and the experience of those who come to enjoy the beach.
“That is very bad, that really affects the image. Who bathes like that? That stings the skin”, expressed Martha, a visitor consulted.
Other bathers expressed concern about the large amount of seaweed accumulated on the shore, especially due to the difficulties it poses for those visiting the place accompanied by children.
”One day I came, I got in there and when I felt that I said: ‘Oh, my mother!’, and after that I felt itching all over my body”, stated Marcos, who recalled a previous experience with sargassum.

Merchants also acknowledge that the phenomenon impacts their economic activities, although they highlight that many people continue to arrive at the beach.
“It affects us a lot, we have to work with that. The competent authorities must have the equipment to combat it. Right now there is little, because the vast majority has gone to Andrés, Boca Chica, but it still affects us as merchants“, pointed out Luis.
In recent years, sargassum has become one of the main environmental challenges for the country’s coastal areas, affecting both tourism activity and the visitor experience.
