Boca Chica.– The mayor of Boca Chica, Ramón Candelaria, assured this Wednesday that the city council, merchants, and the Ministry of Tourism are maintaining joint efforts to address the arrival of sargassum on the municipality’s coasts, a phenomenon that, he warned, will continue to increase in the coming years.
During the equipment delivery carried out by the Ministry of Tourism, Candelaria highlighted that the initiative strengthens the operation developed by the mayor’s office for the collection of seaweed.
“Last year the minister gave us a small truck for sargassum collection and today he is going to deliver a tractor,” the mayor expressed, while valuing the support offered by the Government to municipalities with a tourism vocation.

The municipal executive pointed out that sargassum represents a challenge that could worsen due to global warming, which is why he considered it necessary to continue strengthening mitigation actions.

“It is an issue that will continue to expand; as global warming continues, sargassum will keep arriving in the Dominican Republic,” he indicated.
Candelaria acknowledged that the presence of sargassum directly affects the economic activity of Boca Chica, especially the commercial sector linked to the beach. However, he highlighted that local business owners have joined the cleanup efforts.
“I am a beach merchant, the sargassum issue affects me directly. The business sector has integrated 100% with the mayor’s office, and when sargassum arrives in Boca Chica, the businesses, the mayor’s office, and the Ministry of Tourism, by hand however we can, we remove it,” he stated.

Faced with complaints from merchants and visitors regarding the accumulation of sargassum in recent days, the mayor explained that the phenomenon is variable and that new measures are currently being evaluated to reduce its impact.
Among them, it reported that the mayor’s office is analyzing the installation of a bio-fence at the entrance of the bay, in front of the Boca Marina area, with the aim of reducing the amount of sargassum that reaches the beach.
“A bio-fence is being quoted to try to eliminate as little sargassum as possible from entering the bay and the beach of Boca Chica,” he maintained.
The statements were offered during the event led by the Minister of Tourism, David Collado, in which equipment intended to strengthen the cleanliness and sustainability of several tourist destinations in the country was delivered.
