A Madrid court ordered Meta to pay 479 million euros to 87 Spanish digital press publishers and news agencies for having obtained a competitive advertising advantage for the Facebook and Instagram networks unfairly, infringing European data protection regulations. In a ruling released this Thursday, the Commercial Court number 15 of Madrid partially upholds the claims of the media – which were demanding 551 million euros – by understanding that Meta improperly uses protected personal data of Facebook and Instagram users to insert advertising on those social networks. Meta executives will be summoned to the Spanish Congress to identify responsibilities for the violation of users’ privacy by having tracked navigation on mobile phones without permission, as announced this Wednesday by the Spanish Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez.
