Tecate, Baja California. The Morena councilwoman in the XXV City Council of Tecate, María de Jesús Quijada Maldonado, and her husband, Jesús Pereida, were murdered following an armed attack that occurred this Tuesday afternoon, July 14, in the Hacienda subdivision, in that Baja California municipality.
According to local media reports, the attack occurred around 5:17 in the afternoon on Coyuca Street, when armed men intercepted the black Kia vehicle in which the couple was traveling and opened fire multiple times.
Jesús Pereida died at the scene due to gunshot wounds, while Quijada was seriously injured, with several shots, including one to the head. The official was rushed to a hospital in the United States, where she later passed away due to the severity of her injuries.
After the attack, those responsible escaped in a white car. So far, the authorities have not reported any arrests nor have they established a possible motive for the crime.
He had participated in Morena activities hours earlier
Less than 24 hours before the attack, María de Jesús Quijada participated in an Informative Assembly for the Defense of the Transformation and National Sovereignty, organized by Morena. Through her social media, she expressed her support for the movement and called for strengthening unity and citizen participation.
Hours later, he visited the Tecate Military Colony, where he held a meeting with residents to listen to their concerns and learn about the community’s needs. That post was the last message he shared on his digital platforms.

María de Jesús Quijada was 40 years old and had been serving as a councilwoman since October 2024. Additionally, she was pursuing a law degree at Universidad Humanitas, Tijuana campus.
Before holding an elected office, she developed a career in the System for the Integral Development of the Family (DIF) of Tecate, where she served as general director between 2021 and 2022. She also participated for several years in volunteer and human trafficking prevention programs, receiving specialized training in both Mexico and the United States.
Baja California authorities have initiated investigations to clarify the double homicide and locate those responsible.
