Russia is capable of responding to any strategic threat, and not with words, but with military and technical measures, said the country’s president, Vladimir Putin, this Monday.

During a meeting with members of the Russian Security Council, the leader addressed the need to safeguard national interests in the face of the deterioration of global strategic stability.

“There should be no doubt that Russia is capable of responding to any existing and emerging threat, and responding not with words, but with military and technical measures,” he assured.

“An example of this is our decision to abandon the unilateral moratorium on the deployment of medium- and short-range ground-based missiles. This is a necessary step, dictated by the need to adequately respond to the deployment programs in Europe and the Asia-Pacific region of US and other Western-made weapons, which directly threatens Russia’s security,” he added.

In addition, the head of state stated that Russia’s plans to strengthen its defense capabilities are based on “the changing global environment” and are being implemented “fully and in a timely manner.” “We are confident in the reliability and effectiveness of our national deterrence forces, but at the same time we have no interest in further increasing tensions and triggering an arms race,” he specified.

In this context, he emphasized that Moscow has always proceeded and continues to proceed, preferably and as a priority, according to “political and diplomatic methods” to maintain international peace on the basis of the principles of “equality, indivisibility of security and reciprocal consideration of interests”.
