Santo Domingo.- The VI International Children’s and Youth Book Fair began this Tuesday and will run until Sunday at the Ágora Mall Shopping Center, under the slogan “Reading makes you fly.” During the opening, the event director, Juan Carlos Toral, highlighted the importance of bringing new generations closer to reading.
“We are also trying to raise awareness among parents and teachers that what is important is reading, AND also one of the things that we have to do as a country, I believe, is to gift more books, bring more books, have books in the house so that children can read,” asserted the director of the International Fair, Juan Carlos Toral.
Under the entities of Ediciones Toral and LeaRD, who have been in charge of promoting for six consecutive years reading from an early age, which have been successfully carried out over the last six years.

Books, storytelling, plays, and lectures will once again fill the hallways of the first level of Ágora Mall, as is customary, with the inauguration of the sixth Santo Domingo International Children’s and Youth Book Fair 2026 (Feilij2026).

The cultural event that stimulates the local economy and also promotes reading, cultural tourism, generates business and employment opportunities, and contributes to the development of fostering reading.
During the opening remarks, the organizer and director of Ediciones Toral and LeaRD, Dr. Juan Carlos Toral, highlighted that the country is on the threshold of a new era for children’s and young adult literature, an era that promises to renew and strengthen the bond between books and new generations.
“The importance of reading in the development of future generations cannot be underestimated. Studies show that children who read for pleasure from an early age not only develop a larger vocabulary and linguistic skills, but it also allows for the cultivation of more informed, critical, and compassionate citizens,” he said.

According to Toral, it is essential to create collaboration mechanisms and strategic alliances, through collaborative projects between the public and private sectors, that allow for maximizing the available resources for the promotion of reading, culture, and education.
