Santo Domingo. – In the framework of the celebration of the 249th anniversary of the Independence of the United States, President Luis Abinader highlighted the strength of the bilateral relations between the Dominican Republic and the United States, underlining the shared values of freedom, human dignity, and hope.
“Tonight we are convened by an anniversary that represents the universal symbol of freedom, courage, and hope,” the president expressed at the beginning of his speech, addressed to an audience composed of diplomats, officials, entrepreneurs, and representatives of the American community in the country.
The ceremony, with a Hollywood-centered theme, highlighted the role of cinema as a means of transmitting universal values. President Abinader stated that Hollywood “is not only a globally recognized film industry, but a space that has captured the dreams and challenges of humanity,” and added that many of its stories reflect values also present in Dominican society, such as the importance of family, overcoming adversity, and solidarity.
The Head of State highlighted that the ties between both countries go beyond the diplomatic, encompassing key sectors such as security, trade, education, and human relations, especially due to the significant Dominican community residing in the United States.
“This celebration has a double value: it reaffirms the importance of the ties between the Dominican Republic and the United States, and highlights the principles that unite us as peoples, such as freedom, respect for diversity, and commitment to shared development,” added Abinader.
For her part, the Chargé d’Affaires of the United States Embassy in the Dominican Republic, Patricia Aguilera, expressed that the relationship between both countries goes beyond trade, highlighting that the Dominican Republic also shares and values principles such as freedom and democracy. Aguilera also highlighted the contribution of Dominican writers and actors, and the close friendship between the two nations.
The United States’ Independence Day is celebrated every July 4th, commemorating the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776.
Among those attending the event were the President of the Senate, Alfredo Pacheco; the Ministers of Energy and Mines, Joel Santos; of Public Works, Eduardo Estrella; of Industry and Commerce, Víctor (Ito) Bisonó; the director of the National Police, Major General Ramón Antonio Guzmán Peralta; and the director of the Dominican Navy, Vice Admiral Agustín Alberto Morillo Rodríguez.
