Espaillat brothers’ lawyer denies raids by the Public Ministry

Santo Domingo Miguel Valerio, defense attorney for Antonio and Maribel Espaillat, owners of the defunct Jet Set nightclub, denied this Saturday that the Ministry Public has carried out raids in relation to the case involving his clients.

Upon his arrival at the Palace of Justice in Ciudad Nueva, where the Espaillat brothers have been held since last Thursday, Valerio insisted that the process should not be treated as a criminal case, but as an act of negligence.

Antonio and Maribel Espaillat are being accused of involuntary manslaughter following the collapse of the roof of the Jet Set nightclub, which occurred on April 8th. The tragedy left a devastating toll of more than 230 people dead and approximately 180 injured, becoming one of the most serious disasters in the recent history of the country. Investigations continue, while measures of coercion against the accused are expected to be known in the coming days.
