MIVED supervises more than 120 excavations and buildings in the National District

Santo Domingo.– With the purpose of verifying compliance with protection measures in excavations and buildings currently being erected in the National District, the Ministry of Housing and Buildings (MIVED), through its Private Works Inspection Department, inspected more than 120 works. The inspection days were carried out between August 11 and 29, and 121 works were supervised. After inspection, where important safety measures are reviewed, such as whether the works have protective meshes and whether the excavations have impact protection, it was found that, of which 81 of the works comply with current regulations and while another 40 were notified for partial or total non-compliance. Among the failures observed in the works notified for non-compliance, we find a lack of adequate protection meshes and excavations with insufficient protection. Of the total, 50 buildings have protection meshes and 29 excavations have impact safety, while 38 buildings lack adequate meshes and 2 excavations do not have sufficient protection. The inspected areas included the perimeters between 27 de Febrero Avenue and John F. Kennedy Avenue, as well as the corridor connecting Winston Churchill Avenue with Núñez de Cáceres Avenue.

Similarly, the sections corresponding to Máximo Gómez Avenue and George Washington Avenue were supervised, until connecting with the Luperón – 27 de Febrero perimeter.

The MIVED granted those responsible for the notified works a period not exceeding 25 working days to correct the irregularities raised through a notification act. Depending on the magnitude of the work, the correction time is set at 10, 15, 20 or 25 days.

The Private Works Inspection Department warned that, once the deadline has expired, new verification visits will be carried out and, if the failures are not corrected, the projects will be referred to the Legal Department for the corresponding purposes. These provisions are based on the Regulation for the General Supervision and Inspection of Works R-004, Decree 232-17, which establishes in its Article 61 that the Director of Supervision must ensure that safety and hygiene measures are applied throughout the construction process, in coordination with the Ministry of Labor. Likewise, Article 62 requires the placement of secure tarpaulins and protections around buildings and deep excavations, while Article 64 stipulates that personnel must have helmets, gloves, masks, safety belts, scaffolding, and a first-aid kit on the construction site, in order to prevent accidents.
