Brussels.- A 35-year-old Canadian woman died overnight on Friday while attending the opening of the Belgian electronic music festival Tomorrowland, local media reported this Saturday.
The victim died after suffering a collapse at the festival, reported the Public Prosecutor’s Office of Antwerp, the province where the event is held.
Belgian media indicated that
an investigation has been opened into the circumstances of his death and an autopsy will be performed to determine if he had taken drugs.
Emergency teams tried to resuscitate her at the scene, but she ultimately died after being taken to a hospital in critical condition.
“She received first aid before being transferred to the UZA,” confirmed Debby Wilmsen, the festival organization’s spokesperson, to local media. “We learned that she passed away there. We express our solidarity with her family, friends, and loved ones. The Antwerp Public Prosecutor’s Office is investigating the cause of death and will provide more information about it soon,” she added.
Tomorrowland receives more than 400,000 people from more than 200 different nationalities each year in just two weekends.
Last Wednesday, two days after its inauguration, a fire destroyed the main stage of the festival. After the event, the organization decided to keep access to the entire venue open and installed a new stage in less than 24 hours.
The
Antwerp Public Prosecutor’s Office asked the investigating judge to investigate the fire to determine the exact cause.
Furthermore, the Antwerp Public Prosecutor’s Office also announced this week that the National Institute of Criminalistics and Criminology (NCIC) was going to install a
mobile drug analysis laboratory at the Tomorrowland facilities, for the second consecutive year, because in recent years new psychoactive substances and cocktails of different drugs have become increasingly widespread.
