Los Angeles (USA).– A Jordanian immigrant who was in the custody of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Service (ICE) died in a hospital in Miami (Florida), one day after being transferred to the hospital for treatment, according to the agency this Wednesday.

The immigrant was transferred to Larkin Community Hospital in Miami a day before his death to receive additional treatment and evaluation, due to a fever. Saleh had arrived in the United States in March 1994 and settled in Florida, where he obtained permanent residency. The immigrant was found guilty in 2018 on federal charges of committing wire fraud with food stamps, and was sentenced to 24 months in prison. Due to this conviction, Saleh lost his permanent residency and an immigration judge ordered his deportation. The immigrant was detained on September 14 in Pompano Beach (Florida) and was transferred to the Krome Detention Center for the final expulsion process. This would be the second death of an immigrant in ICE custody so far in fiscal year 2026, which began on October 1st. Mexican Leo Cruz-Silva, 34, died on October 4 in the Ste. Genevieve County Jail, (Missouri). ICE counted at least 21 deaths of immigrants in its custody in fiscal year 2025, equaling the number of deaths in 2020 during the pandemic. Last Sunday, the death of two immigrants in El Paso (Texas) was also reported. Axel Evarado Iquic-Sequen, 30 years old, from Guatemala, and Manuel Mateo López, 22 years old, from Mexico, died when the vehicle in which they were traveling with five other undocumented immigrants crashed while trying to flee from the Border Patrol.
