From Katy Perry to Chiquis Rivera: Hollywood raises its voice against Trump’s raids

Hollywood celebrities like Kim Kardashian, Eva Longoria or Katy Perry and Hispanic artists ranging from Pedro Pascal to Gloria Estefan have shown their support in recent days for the protests against the immigration raids of the US President, Donald Trump. The television star Kim Kardashian was one of the last to call the raids of the United States Immigration Service (ICE) in Los Angeles “inhumane” and to defend the contribution of immigrants to American society. “Growing up in Los Angeles, I have seen how deeply immigrants are integrated into the fabric of this city. They are our neighbors, friends, classmates and colleagues, and family,” she shared in a text circulated on her social media. The American singer Katy Perry conveyed a similar message, wondering how “a city built on Mexican work, history, and culture could take a turn and criminalize the very people who shaped it.” Phinneas O’Connell, winner of a Grammy and brother of singer Billie Eilish, has not only shown his rejection of Trump’s policies, but also reported that last weekend he was present at the massive protests in Los Angeles. “They fired tear gas almost immediately at the protest, which was very peaceful, in the center. They are inciting this,” wrote the American singer on his social media, according to The Independent. Mark Ruffalo, one of the most critical voices against Trump, has also criticized the government’s actions in the face of the demonstrations on his social media and highlighted the class inequality that deportations conceal.

The Hispanic community cries out to heaven against Trump

Artists with Hispanic roots have spoken out against the raids and have sided with the peaceful protesters who have been demonstrating for six days in the Californian city. It is the case of Eva Longoria, of Hispanic-Mexican roots, who in a video shared on her social networks called for more compassion for people who migrate to other countries in search of a better life. “We all agree that nobody wants criminals in our country (…) but that’s not what’s happening. These raids are happening at birthday parties, graduations, in stores… those are not criminals,” said the actress. Also, the beloved Chilean-American actor Pedro Pascal shared a video in which several people are seen holding flags from different Latin American countries, defending a Los Angeles that was built “by the best of the USA.” “They are not criminals, they are the heart of Los Angeles”, the images highlight. The singer Chiquis Rivera, daughter of the late star Jenni Rivera, held a live video with an expert lawyer to inform about the rights of migrants in the U.S.. Cuban-American singer Gloria Estefan expressed her concern about the “loss of humanity” with immigration policies. “I don’t recognize my country,” lamented the singer, recalling the moment when she witnessed an operation in which US government officials separated a mother from her baby.
