Luigi Mangione admitted in a New York court on Friday that he shot and killed UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in Manhattan in 2024.
“I shot Mr. Thompson in Manhattan,” Mangione told the court, according to local media reports. He also acknowledged that he understood his actions could cause Thompson to fear for his life or suffer bodily injury and that he knew what he was doing was illegal.
Thompson was shot near a hotel in Manhattan on December 4, 2024, in a killing that sparked widespread attention across the United States.
Mangione was later charged with federal offenses in 2025. Federal prosecutors had sought the death penalty, but that possibility was subsequently dismissed by a court.
The judge scheduled Mangione’s sentencing for December 18.
