Maduro is transferred to a federal prison after his arrival in New York, according to media
New York.- Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro was transferred this Saturday to the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, where he will be held, after arriving in Manhattan by helicopter, local media report.
The helicopter took off from a helipad in Manhattan bound for the detention center after the Venezuelan leader was processed at a federal facility linked to the United States Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA), according to The New York Times and CNN.
According to television, a caravan of police vehicles escorted Maduro from the helipad to the penitentiary center facilities.
In addition, the official rapid response account of the White House published a video this Saturday that appeared to show his arrest and transfer.
“Arrested and escorted,” stated on the social network X the account Rapid Response 47 above the video, in which Maduro is seen wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, walking down a hallway with a blue carpet bearing the inscription “DEA NYD.”
In the video, Maduro seems to wish someone “Good night, happy New Year”.
Maduro arrived in the city today in a helicopter that landed in an area on the banks of the Hudson River, near 31st Street, on the west side of Manhattan, after having been previously transported in a military plane to an airport in the north of the state.
The Venezuelan president, formally accused in 2020 by the Southern District Attorney’s Office of New York, which this Saturday made public a substitute accusation in that same court, will face federal court charges for narcoterrorism, conspiracy to import cocaine into the United States, and crimes related to automatic weapons.
The Boeing 757 military aircraft that transported Maduro from Guantanamo had landed on the afternoon of this Saturday at the Stewart Air National Guard Base, a military airport located in the north of New York state, after having been captured in the early hours by US forces in Caracas.
Dozens of agents from different federal agencies, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the DEA, were waiting for him in Stewart, with temperatures close to two degrees Celsius below zero. Maduro disembarked from the plane handcuffed and was transported under custody by helicopter to Manhattan.

U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi indicated today via X that Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, were “formally charged in the Southern District of New York”.
“They will soon face the full weight of American justice on American soil and before American courts,” Bondi said.
The original accusation from the New York court, based on a DEA investigation, points to Maduro as the alleged leader of the so-called Cartel of the Suns, a network allegedly linked to high-ranking Venezuelan military officials who sought to enrich themselves and “use cocaine as a weapon against the United States”.
The President of the United States, Donald Trump, confirmed this Saturday that his country carried out “successfully a large-scale attack” on Venezuelan soil and that Maduro and his wife were “captured and taken out of the country”.
