Maduro says that the export of food will be the new source of foreign currency for Venezuela
Caracas.– Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro said on Monday that the export of food will be “the new source of national wealth for foreign currency”, a statement he makes amid tensions over the US military deployment in the Caribbean and the recent confiscations of two ships loaded with Venezuelan crude oil.
The president affirmed that Venezuela will become “a major food exporting power,” during a visit to an agro-productive commune in Caracas, broadcast by the state-owned channel Venezolana de Televisión (VTV).
“We have to start producing pure foods, free of chemicals that make us sick, and 100% organic because, in addition, the world is demanding organic food,” said the Chavista leader.
In this sense, he highlighted the work of community organizations in the production of food in conucos (gardens) and affirmed that the South American country is prepared to be a great power.
“The whole world is going to thank us and they are going to snatch them from our hands (the food), and it will be the new source of national wealth for foreign currency,” he said.
Oil is Venezuela’s main source of income and in recent weeks it has been involved in a crisis due to the announcement by US President Donald Trump to block all sanctioned oil tankers entering and leaving the South American country, seizing two ships.
Maduro, who calls these confiscations “piracy”, stated last week that the current context marked by the growing pressures from the United States represents a “test” for the South American country to free itself from oil and be “stronger as an economy”.
Washington has maintained an air and naval deployment in the southern Caribbean since August, near Venezuelan waters, which, it claims, aims to combat drug trafficking in the region, but which Caracas interprets as “threats” and an attempt to bring about a change of regime.
Trump assured this Monday that he spoke “very recently” with Maduro, but said that the conversation was not fruitful to reduce pressure from Washington, which, according to the US president, included Wednesday’s attack on a pier allegedly used by drug traffickers.
Venezuelan authorities have not commented on the alleged attack announced by the U.S. president.
