Texas, USA – A man from Arlington, Texas, was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole after being found guilty of the murder of his estranged wife, in a case that raised serious questions about a restraining order and police conduct prior to the crime.
It is Frederick Spears, 57, who was found guilty of capital murder for the stabbing death of Mary Spears, 53, which occurred on September 22, 2025, in Arlington.

The Tarrant County jury’s verdict came in just 17 minutes, according to information released about the judicial process. After being found guilty, Spears received a sentence of life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.
The crime occurred despite a restraining order
According to prosecutors, the murder occurred a few days after a judge ordered Frederick Spears to stay away from Mary Spears.
However, according to the indictment, the Arlington Police allegedly left the man by mistake at his wife’s home. Subsequently, Spears allegedly returned to the scene during the early morning hours.
Prosecutors argued during the trial that the defendant had previously purchased a set that included knives and a saw, described by them as a “murder kit”. The evidence presented sought to demonstrate that the attack against Mary Spears was not an accidental event, but a premeditated assault.
According to the Tarrant County District Attorney’s Office, Frederick Spears waited for his wife in the backyard of the home. When Mary left the house, the man allegedly approached her and began the attack.

“He always said: ‘I am going to kill you’”
During the trial, Assistant Prosecutor Allenna Bangs asserted that Mary Spears was the victim of a brutal attack and pointed out that the defendant had expressed threats against his wife for years.
“He always said: ‘I am going to kill you’”, stated Bangs when referring to the threats that, according to the Prosecutor’s Office, Frederick Spears had made previously.
Mary Spears was found unconscious by her son, Ashton, who subsequently alerted the authorities. The woman was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead as a result of the injuries sustained.
The Prosecutor’s Office used this background information to argue that there was a pattern of threats and that the murder was the culmination of a series of conflicts between the couple.
Spears also tried to attack a police dog
After the attack, authorities located Frederick Spears behind a church. According to the information presented in the case, the man had stabbed himself and subsequently attempted to stab a police dog that was participating in the operation to apprehend him.
