Ohio Governor Mike DeWine, a Republican, has broken with President Donald Trump over the administration’s plan to deport Haitian migrants, calling the policy “a mistake.” DeWine warned that large-scale deportations would hurt Springfield and the broader Ohio economy, arguing that many Haitians came to the state to work and fill critical labor shortages.
In an interview with CBS, DeWine defended the Haitian community, saying its members have played a key role in Springfield’s economic recovery. His office also told EFE that it had not received any notification of increased federal immigration enforcement following the expiration of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haitian nationals.
DeWine’s comments mark a rare public disagreement with Trump’s immigration agenda. The governor argued that removing Haitian workers would negatively affect local businesses and communities that have benefited from their contributions in recent years.
