The U.S. President, Donald Trump, reiterated this Tuesday that he plans to launch ground attacks against targets in Latin America and the Caribbean that his country links to drug trafficking.
“If we attack them on land, they go to the boats. So we attack the boats first. Now there are no boats. Now we are going to attack them on land. We are going to attack them with great force on land“, he claimed in a conversation with the press, in which he defended the effectiveness of the bombings of his country’s Army against small boats in Caribbean waters and the Pacific Ocean, labeled without proof as “narco-boats”.

According to his words, since Washington implemented its new policy, consisting of using military force to combat drug trafficking, the movement of drugs towards US territory “has decreased considerably” and the internal consumption of illicit substances has fallen “around 33 %”.
In a similar vein to what he did on January 24th, Trump
refrained from offering specifics on which Latin American and Caribbean territories could be the target of a US attack, under the cover of anti-cartel operations. Then
he said that
“it could be anywhere” in Central and South America, as well as Mexico and the Caribbean islands.
In this regard, the Mexican and Colombian authorities
have rejected directly the possibility of a violation of the sovereignty of their nations under any argument and, instead, have advocated for
cooperation binational and regional to put a stop to the scourge.
