The United States authorities requested that NATO increase its involvement in the security of the Arctic, a region where international competition and geostrategic activity have increased in recent years. The request responds to the retreat of polar ice and the opening of new trade routes, factors that have facilitated the advance of powers such as Russia and China in a territory considered key to the interests of Washington and its allies. Under the leadership of the supreme allied commander in Europe, General “Alexus G. Grynkewich”, NATO is in the final phase of planning for Operation “Arctic Sentry”, the Alliance’s first mission dedicated exclusively to Arctic security. This initiative includes patrols, joint exercises, and monitoring of increasingly busy maritime routes due to melting ice. The Joint Force Command Norfolk will play a central role in the operational implementation to strengthen coordination between North America and Europe.
