U.S. Rep. María Elvira Salazar has called on the U.S. State Department to take action against Haitian gang leader Jimmy Chérizier, widely known as “Barbecue.”
In a post on X, Salazar described “Barbecue” as the face of Haiti’s ongoing crisis, accusing him of leading gangs that have taken control of large parts of Port-au-Prince.
“A man who calls himself ‘Barbecue’ has become the face of Haiti’s collapse,” Salazar wrote. “He leads the gangs that have taken over Port-au-Prince, forced people from their homes, shut down schools, and made the capital unlivable.”
Her comments come as Haiti continues to grapple with escalating gang violence, widespread displacement, and a worsening humanitarian crisis.
