Rodríguez did not hesitate to point out who, according to him, is the best right-handed hitter he has seen: “His name is Manny Ramírez. And I don’t say that just because I played with him too much, but also with Albert Pujols. “For me, they are one and two in history”, he expressed in the episode of the podcast Emprendedores with the Minister of Tourism David Collado.
The former player took the opportunity to relive what he considers the best moment of his career: November 3, 2009, when the Yankees won their 27th championship against the Philadelphia Phillies. “All the reasons I went to the Yankees was to bring a championship to New York.” I remember Mariano Rivera pitching, Jorge Posada behind the plate, and Robinson Canó making the last out… there were all my childhood dreams,” he recalled emotionally.
He also shared a curious episode that occurred in 1996, when a rival manager, Davey Johnson, asked for his bat to be checked in the middle of his at-bat, during an offensive hot streak that would lead him to win the batting title that year. “I knew it was a mental game. The umpire told me: ‘Alex, I’m sorry, I have to take your bat.’ They confiscated it, sent it to the Commissioner’s office, but in the end I used another one and hit a home run anyway,” he recounted with laughter.
Rodríguez also offered an inspiring message to young people who dream of going far in sports:
“I always say that you are the average of the five people you surround yourself with. Surround yourself with good people, because that defines who you are and who you will be.”
