Arizona Diamondbacks received a devastating blow this Tuesday upon confirmation that Cuban outfielder
Lourdes Gurriel Jr. suffered a
rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee, an injury that will keep him out for the remainder of the 2025 season.

The mishap occurred during Monday’s game against the Rangers, when Gurriel tried to avoid a collision with center fielder
Blaze Alexander, who made a spectacular dive to catch a hit in the gap between left and center field. Although there was no contact, Gurriel put his right leg down awkwardly in an attempt to stop and immediately fell to the ground.
“I made the play and had no idea what had happened behind me,” Alexander recounted after the game that the D-backs lost 7-5 in 10 innings. “When I turned around, I saw Gurriel on the ground and I was immediately worried.”
The 31-year-old Cuban was assisted on the field and transported in a medical cart. Although the exact recovery time has not yet been determined, the magnitude of the injury confirms that he will not return for the remainder of the campaign.
Gurriel’s absence represents a hard blow to the Diamondbacks’ aspirations, who still maintain minimal hopes of reaching the postseason. The outfielder was going through a great offensive moment with
32 RBIs since August 1, only surpassed in the Major Leagues by
Kyle Schwarber (33).
