Luis Gil will start the season in Triple-A; Yankees and Giants will open the 2026 campaign on Netflix

MESA, ARIZONA. – Dominican pitcher Luis Gil will begin the 2026 season in Triple-A, awaiting to join the New York Yankees’ rotation later on.

Manager Aaron Boone reported that the 2024 American League Rookie of the Year will start the season in Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, as part of the team’s plan for him to continue his development and be able to integrate later as a fifth starter when needed. Gil, 27 years old, had a 2-1 record with a 4.66 ERA in spring training, after a past season in which he pitched 57 innings. On the other hand, the Yankees will start the 2026 season facing the San Francisco Giants in the Opening Night game of Major League Baseball, which will be played at Oracle Park in San Francisco and will be broadcast worldwide by the Netflix platform, marking the first time an official MLB game will be broadcast live by that streaming service. The game will feature Max Fried for the Yankees and Logan Webb for the Giants as starting pitchers, in a duel between two historic teams in Major League Baseball. The official Opening Day of Major League Baseball will be Thursday, with 11 games on the schedule, while other teams will start their season on Friday.
