Colombia pays emotional tribute to cyclist Cristian Muñoz following his death

VENTAQUEMADA, COLOMBIA. – Colombian cycling bid farewell with honors to Cristian Camilo Muñoz, who recently passed away after an accident in European territory, with a massive caravan that accompanied his return to his homeland. The coffin of the 30-year-old cyclist was transported in a procession led by fire trucks and followed by dozens of vehicles and cyclists who traveled the road to the municipality of Ventaquemada, where he was born and took his first steps in the sport. During the journey, residents came out to the streets with flags and farewell messages, in a show of affection towards who was considered one of the outstanding figures of local cycling. The body was taken to the City Council, where a catafalque was set up so that family, friends, and community members could pay their last respects before the scheduled funeral honors. Muñoz lost his life on April 24 in Oviedo, after being transferred from France after suffering a fall during the Tour du Jura. According to his team, Nu Colombia, medical complications derived from an infection worsened his health. The cyclist, born in 1996, had been part of the team since 2024 and had achieved important results at the national level, including stage victories and the mountain title in the Clásico RCN. The tribute in his honor will continue with a vigil and a mass, in a final farewell marked by the respect and admiration of an entire country.
