England became the first European team to qualify for the tournament, after thrashing 0-5 Latvia, and will lead the representation of the Old Continent, which will have a total of sixteen teams in the final phase. For their part, Ivory Coast and Senegal completed the list of the nine direct African qualifiers, joining Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt, Algeria, Ghana, Cape Verde and South Africa. The Confederation of African Football (CAF) still has an additional spot that will be defined through the international repechage. In South America (Conmebol), the six direct qualifiers are Argentina, Brazil, Ecuador, Uruguay, Paraguay and Colombia, while Bolivia obtained the repechage spot after finishing in seventh place. The Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) will have New Zealand as a direct representative, and New Caledonia will play the international play-off with the hope of debuting in a senior World Cup. In Asia (AFC), the eight confirmed qualifiers are Japan, Iran, Uzbekistan, South Korea, Jordan, Australia, Qatar and Saudi Arabia, in addition to an extra spot for the repechage.
