Buenos Aires.- Argentine President Javier Milei announced this Sunday that he will declare a national holiday on the day the Argentine national team decides to celebrate with fans upon their return to the country after falling 1-0 to Spain in the 2026 World Cup final this Sunday.
“Given the concern regarding the celebrations for the achievement reached by the Argentine national team, I inform the population that, based on what the players and the coaching staff decide regarding the day to celebrate, it will be declared a national holiday,” wrote Milei on his X social network account.

The announcement comes as the squad led by Lionel Scaloni prepares for its return to Argentina, scheduled for this Monday afternoon, although there is currently no official confirmation regarding the arrival time or when and how the celebrations with the fans will take place.
This Sunday, after the end of the match in which Spain was crowned champion with a goal by Ferran Torres in extra time, tens of thousands of Argentines took to the streets in different parts of the country to express their support and gratitude to the national team for having reached the final and coming so close to a back-to-back championship.
Days ago, Milei made the Casa Rosada, the seat of the Argentine government, available so that the team could celebrate from the presidential balcony in the event of winning the world title.
The president also reported that the General Secretariat of the Presidency, headed by Karina Milei, and the Military House were working on an operation to facilitate the celebrations, while the Ministry of Security and federal forces began designing a special device for the eventual return of the delegation.
As part of those preparations, the Argentine Football Association (AFA) announced this Saturday the suspension of all matches scheduled for this Monday and Tuesday in the different categories of Argentine soccer, with the aim of prioritizing the return of the national team.
