The New York Mets placed closer Devin Williams on the 15-day injured list Monday because of a right shoulder strain, adding another setback to a difficult first season with the team.
Williams, 31, had previously been unavailable because of what the Mets described as right arm fatigue. He returned Friday against the Pittsburgh Pirates but allowed two runs in a non-save situation.
The right-hander is 3-2 with 16 saves and a 4.66 ERA in 42 relief appearances this season. The move to the injured list is retroactive to Saturday.
Williams has spent eight seasons in the major leagues, posting a 34-18 record, 102 saves and a 2.70 ERA in 350 relief appearances with the Milwaukee Brewers, New York Yankees and Mets.
