Santo Domingo. The Dominican Republic opens its doors this Friday to the Central American and Caribbean Games Santo Domingo 2026, a historic edition that brings together more than 6,000 athletes from 37 countries and territories. Competitors will participate in 40 sports and 56 disciplines over a little more than two weeks.
The opening ceremony is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. at the Félix Sánchez Olympic Stadium, where President Luis Abinader will officially inaugurate the sporting event, considered the most important in the region and the centenary edition of these Games, whose first celebration took place in 1926.
The show will include a display of Dominican culture and folklore before thousands of attendees and an international audience.
2026 Central American Games
Although several competitions began early during the week, this Friday’s opening ceremony marks the official start of the event, which will run until August 8 and will distribute thousands of medals among the participating athletes.
The Dominican delegation will compete with one of the largest representations in its history, driven by internationally renowned figures who will seek to place the country among the main powers in the medal table. For the organization, the Central American Games also represent an opportunity to showcase the Dominican Republic’s capacity for hosting large-scale sporting events.
Historic headquarters
Santo Domingo becomes the host of the Central American and Caribbean Games for the third time, following the editions held in 1974 and 1986, consolidating the Dominican Republic’s prominence in organizing regional multi-sport competitions.
Sports in competition
For 16 days, the sports venues in the capital and other locations will host competitions in athletics, swimming, baseball, basketball, volleyball, boxing, judo, weightlifting, gymnastics, and taekwondo, among other disciplines. Athletes will seek to add medals for their respective delegations and strengthen their preparation for the Olympic cycle leading up to Los Angeles 2028.
