SANTO DOMINGO.– The Dominican Republic closed this Tuesday the tenth day of the XXV Central American and Caribbean Games Santo Domingo 2026 with a total of 85 medals, distributed in 18 gold, 18 silver and 49 bronze, to maintain sixth place in the general medal table.

Athletics was once again the protagonist by contributing a gold medal, won by Yeral Núñez in the 400-meter hurdles, and a bronze by Yesi Tejeda in the javelin throw.

Yeral Núñez wins gold

Yeral Núñez was proclaimed champion of the 400-meter hurdles by dominating the final with a time of 48.30 seconds, surpassing the Salvadoran Pablo Ibáñez, who took the silver with 49.64, while the Mexican Guillermo Campos took the bronze by recording 49.82.

Núñez’s gold represents the first title achieved by a Dominican on national soil in this event within a regional multi-sport competition since the conquest by Félix Sánchez at the Santo Domingo 2003 Pan American Games.

Yesi Tejeda sets national record

Javelin thrower Yesi Tejeda won the bronze medal in javelin by setting a new national record with a throw of 54.95 meters.

The event was won by the Colombian Flor Ruiz, who set a new Games record with 67.34 meters, while fellow Colombian Valentina Barrios took the silver with 58.14.

Marileidy Paulino advances with authority

Olympic champion Marileidy Paulino qualified without difficulty for the 400-meter final by winning her semifinal with a time of 50.63 seconds.

Also advancing to the final was the Dominican Anabel Medina, who took third place in her heat with a time of 52.49 seconds.

The final of the event will be held this Wednesday, when Paulino will seek to defend the title won in San Salvador 2023.

Handball secures medal

The women’s handball team advanced to the tournament final after defeating Mexico 29-27 in an exciting match held at Parque del Este.

The top scorers for the Dominican Republic were Yojaver Brito and Ania Ramos, with six goals each, while captain Nancy Peña added five goals.

Four boxers secure bronze

Dominican boxing also had an outstanding performance by qualifying four boxers for the semifinals and securing an equal number of bronze medals.

Disney Medina won by unanimous decision (5-0) against the Haitian Gerónimo Seide in the 60-kilogram category.

In the 80-kilo division, Noel Pacheco also defeated Charles Cox of Barbados 5-0.

In the women’s division, Estefani Almánzar advanced by technical superiority over the Guatemalan Jennifer Yool, while Miguel Ángel Encarnación defeated the Guatemalan Antony Ramírez 5-0 in the 65-kilogram category.

The only Dominican elimination of the day corresponded to Esther Jiménez, who fell by decision to the Venezuelan Irismar Cardozo.

Mixed relay disqualification appealed

At the end of the day, the Dominican delegation maintained an appeal regarding the disqualification of the 4×100-meter mixed relay team, which had its gold medal stripped due to an infraction during the baton exchange and a lane violation. The decision remained under review by technical officials.
