Santo Domingo.- The Museum of Modern Art of the Dominican Republic unveiled this Wednesday the monumental sculpture The Chaise Adulte (The Adult Chair), by the Dominican surrealist artist Iván Tovar. The piece, which is part of the Tovar The Chair project, is installed in the Museum for the contemplation of the public.
The Chaise Adulte was originally conceived as an oil on canvas in 1969, reinterpreted in bronze in 1971 and 2013, and in 2024 brought to a monumental scale in stainless steel with a height of 13 feet (4 meters). Previously, this version was exhibited in Broadway Plaza, Times Square, New York, between 45th and 46th Streets and Seventh Avenue.
The arrival of the sculpture at the Museum of Modern Art of the Dominican Republic constitutes a cultural event that allows Dominicans to appreciate in the country one of the most emblematic works of Tovar, considered one of the essential figures of surrealism in Latin America.
The project was made possible thanks to the Iván Tovar Foundation, with the sponsorship of the Dominican collector Héctor José Rizek Sued and the work of a multidisciplinary team.
With this installation, the Museum of Modern Art of the Dominican Republic reaffirms its commitment to bring the most relevant expressions of modern and contemporary art to the national public, highlighting the legacy of Dominican artists with international projection.
