Tegucigalpa.– The relationship between Israel and Honduras began “a new chapter”, said Israeli Ambassador to Tegucigalpa, Nadav Goren, after presenting his credentials to the new Honduran president, Nasry ‘Tito’ Asfura.
Goren, whose diplomatic formalization was postponed for a year and a half, told reporters that it is a “very happy day”, and then underlined the will of both Governments to strengthen ties after the investiture of Asfura, leader of the conservative National Party.
The diplomat indicated that this new stage was driven by the trip that Asfura recently made to Jerusalem, before assuming power, during which the priority areas of bilateral cooperation were defined.
“I had the opportunity and the honor of traveling with the president to Israel. There we discussed in detail all the areas in which we want to collaborate (…) because for Israel it is a new chapter,” he emphasized.
Goren reaffirmed Israel’s commitment to support the development agenda of the new President of Honduras, with a priority focus on technology transfer to reactivate the Honduran productive sector.
“Honduras is very important to Israel at this moment. Now that we have presented our credentials, we have a lot to do. We are trying to support President Asfura’s agenda and objectives,” he highlighted.
The New Approach to Bilateral Relations
He pointed out that Israeli cooperation will focus on strategic sectors such as agriculture, water management, technology, innovation, and security.
“Israel and Honduras have had relations for many years and we are going to return with more effort, more energy and more optimism,” Goren assured.
As things stand, the diplomat assured that his country has “many plans” with Honduras, which include the constant exchange of technical delegations and the maintenance of a “high-level dialogue” between both nations.
Asfura, of Palestinian origin and a native of Tegucigalpa, where he was born on June 8, 1958, was elected president of Honduras on November 30, in the twelfth general elections held in the country since the return to democracy in 1980, after almost two decades of military regimes.
