Magnitude 4.7 earthquake woke up the city of Pucallpa, in the central jungle of Peru

A 4.7 magnitude earthquake woke up the city of Pucallpa, capital of the jungle region of Ucayali, in central Peru, this Monday, without personal or material damage being reported in this area of the country, according to the National Seismological Center. The tremor was recorded at 07:03 local time (12:03 GMT) with its epicenter 101 kilometers east of Pucallpa, in the province of Coronel Portillo, and at a depth of 137 kilometers. The telluric movement was also felt with an intensity of II and III in Pucallpa, one of the main cities of the Peruvian Amazon and near the border with Brazil.

Peru is located in the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, where more than 80% of the world’s seismic activity occurs, due to the collision of the Pacific and Nazca tectonic plates, on the country’s southern coast. The last devastating earthquake erupted in 2007 in the southern Ica region with a magnitude of 7.9, which was felt in much of the country, and left at least 500 dead and millions of dollars in economic losses.
