The election took place within the framework of the IAPA’s working sessions, an entity that brings together the main media outlets in the Americas and that, for more than seven decades, has been a firm voice in the defense of freedom of the press and expression in the hemisphere.
Following his selection, Medina expressed his gratitude for the distinction and reaffirmed the conglomerate’s commitment to the practice of journalism with ethics, independence and responsibility, while stating that a well-informed society is essential for the strengthening of democracy.
“I assume this responsibility with humility and conviction, aware that freedom of the press is a fundamental pillar of democracy. From the SIP we will continue working to strengthen the right of citizens to be informed and the duty of journalists to carry out their work responsibly,” he stated.
The CEO of Grupo de Medios Panorama highlighted the historical role of the SIP as a benchmark for free and independent journalism on the continent, and emphasized that its example inspires those who believe in communication committed to truth and democratic values.

He pointed out that the daily exercise of the Grupo de Medios Panorama, made up of VTV Canal 32, Panorama FM 96.9 and the newspaper Panorama, in its print and digital versions, is governed by the mission of offering truthful, plural and responsible information. He ratified that the group’s purpose is to guide society, contribute to public debate and promote social coexistence in the country, convinced that a well-informed citizenry is essential for the strengthening of democracy.
Medina thanked the Dominican board of directors of the SIP, represented by Persio Maldonado, Miguel Franjul, Aníbal de Castro, José Monegro, Nuria Piera, AlbanelysFamilia and Roberto Cavada. He also took the opportunity to congratulate Alicia Ortega of Grupo SIN and Alba Nellys Familia of Multimedios El Caribe for their incorporation into the SIP Board of Directors.
Miguel Medina’s nomination was presented by the SIP Nominations Committee and he was elected from a list of more than forty candidates from different countries on the continent. In total, 20 new directors were chosen for the 2025-2028 period, who will make up the body in charge of supervising the institutional and strategic affairs of the SIP between each general assembly.
The Board of Directors is in charge of adopting policies, resolutions and key decisions for the functioning of the organization, including the defense of freedom of the press and the approval of internal regulations.
Roberto Rock, past president of the SIP, explained that this board of directors, within the SIP, is made up of 60 members from different countries and every three years a group of 20 is renewed, that is, a third. Rock read the complete list of the new members. Also entered through the Dominican Republic as new members of the Board of Directors of the SIP: Alicia Ortega of Servicios Informativos Nacionales SIN and Alba Nelly Familia of El Caribe-CDN. The Inter American Press Association held its 81st General Assembly in Punta Cana with the participation of delegations from various countries of the continent. The meeting addressed the main challenges of contemporary journalism, with attention to freedom of the press, the sustainability of the media and the impact of artificial intelligence on the profession.
