Lima.- Peru received this Thursday a first batch of 225,000 doses of the dengue vaccine to strengthen the immunization of the population in the country’s northern and jungle regions, as one of the health prevention measures ahead of the arrival of the El Niño weather phenomenon.
The Minister of Health, Luis Dyer, received the first batch of vaccines against the disease transmitted by the Aedes aegypti mosquito, to which another batch of 219,780 doses will be added next week, through the National Center for Supply of Strategic Health Resources (Cenares).
Dyer said that today marks “a new stage putting the health of Peruvians in first place“.
“Dengue does not wait and neither do we; that is why we act with prevention, because every vaccine means an opportunity to avoid hospitalizations, severe cases, and save lives,” the authority stated.
The vaccines will be destined for the prioritized regions, which are the Amazonian Loreto and Ucayali, as well as the northern Piura and Tumbes, to strengthen immunization against dengue for children and adolescents aged 10 to 20, due to their greater vulnerability to contagion and complications associated with dengue.

“I want to make an appeal to parents: when the vaccines arrive in your regions, complete the two doses. The vaccines are safe, free, and are our best tool to protect our children and adolescents,” stated Dyer.

The territory of Peru could experience temperatures of up to 36 degrees Celsius in the coming days, even though the country is in the middle of the austral winter and the imminent impact of the El Niño Costero and El Niño climate phenomena in the equatorial Pacific is being announced.
The National Meteorology and Hydrology Service of Peru (Senamhi) issued an “extreme” danger level warning on Wednesday from July 30 to August 1, noting that maximum temperatures between 30 and 36 degrees are expected on the north coast.
Maximum temperatures will vary between 24 and 30 degrees on the central coast and between 23 and 30 degrees on the southern coast, the report added.

The weather warning indicated that maximum temperatures between 18 and 32 degrees Celsius are also expected in the northern highlands, between 14 and 28 degrees in the central highlands, and between 13 and 29 degrees in the southern highlands.
