Citizens and social media users have reacted with divided opinions after the death of Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, alias “El Mencho”, who was identified as the leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), was confirmed. The controversy arose after the public appearance of the President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, amid questions from the press and citizens who asked her for explanations about the security situation in the country. In a video widely circulating on digital platforms, the president is seen briefly smiling while being approached by reporters who asked her what message she was sending to the citizenry after the announcement. During the exchange, journalists are heard insisting on when an official report would be offered, to which the president responded that the security cabinet would provide details shortly. However, the gesture captured by the cameras unleashed a wave of comments on social media. Some sectors interpreted the expression as a sign of satisfaction for what they consider a significant blow to organized crime. Others, however, described the reaction as inappropriate given the climate of tension in several areas of the country, especially in cities like Guadalajara, where episodes of violence and operations have been reported following the fall of the alleged drug trafficker.
